SUMMARY:Italians Helped Shape the Nation
DESCRIPTION:Many Italians came to the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s\, but they were not the first Italian immigrants to America. Historian Tom Frascella will speak about the earliest cohorts who came to the U.S.\, highlighting the Italian immigrants whose labor and skills helped establish the early success of the Jamestown colony in the 1600s and contributions in the 1700s from figures such as Filippo Mazzei\, who inspired language for the Declaration of Independence\, and Giovanni Battiste Sartori\, who acted as an envoy from the Vatican Papal States to the consulate in Trenton.

SUMMARY:Restoring Works of Art
DESCRIPTION:Restoration is defined as the act of returning something to a former condition\, which raises many complex questions when applied to the restoration of historical artifacts and works of art. And why do we restore works of art at all? Bart Devolder\, Chief Conservator of the Princeton University Art Museum\, will discuss these issues\, using several case studies including works created in Italy. Devolder will illustrate that restoring a work of art to its former glory is not always straightforward.

SUMMARY:Maria Montessori’s Pacifism
DESCRIPTION:Due to a change in the speaker’s schedule\, the program originally planned for March 5 at 5 pm (“Maria Montessori’s Pacifism”) has been rescheduled to March 12 at 6 pm. Sorry for any inconvenience. \nItalian educator and physician Maria Montessori (1870–1952) is best known for the teaching method that bears her name. She was also a lifelong pacifist\, although historians tend to consider her writings on this topic as secondary to her pedagogy. In this talk\, Erica Moretti\, assistant professor of Italian at the Fashion Institute of Technology-SUNY\, will reframe Montessori’s pacifism as the foundation for her educational activism and unearths the transnational dimension of humanitarianism\, emphasizing her vision of the classroom as a gateway to reshaping society.
