SUMMARY:The History of Dance in Italy
DESCRIPTION:Rome native Andrea Marini\, who dances with the American Repertory Ballet Company\, will give an overview of how dance has accompanied human beings—even before the emergence of language. In Italy\, traditional folk dances still reflect the fusion between ancient Italic cultures and the influences of the various populations they came into contact with over time. Andrea will explore some of the most iconic Italian folk dances— from the Tarantella to the Furlana—leading up to the refined art of ballet and the prestigious Italian opera and symphonic foundations.

SUMMARY:Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the Remaking of Myth
DESCRIPTION:Among the most influential poems ever written\, Ovid’s Metamorphoses remains our foremost source for classical mythology. It is also a wildly unfaithful retelling. Princeton University’s C. Luke Soucy will discuss the appeal and legacy of Ovid’s irreverent epic from antiquity through the Renaissance and into the present\, as well as the challenges he encountered creating his National Translation Award–shortlisted translation of the work.

SUMMARY:Restoring Works of Art
DESCRIPTION:Restoration is defined as the act of returning something to a former condition\, which raises many complex questions when applied to the restoration of historical artifacts and works of art. And why do we restore works of art at all? Bart Devolder\, Chief Conservator of the Princeton University Art Museum\, will discuss these issues\, using several case studies including works created in Italy. Devolder will illustrate that restoring a work of art to its former glory is not always straightforward.

SUMMARY:Italians Helped Shape the Nation
DESCRIPTION:Many Italians came to the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s\, but they were not the first Italian immigrants to America. SUMMARY:The Italian Squad
DESCRIPTION:Professor emeritus of journalism at Brooklyn College and a former reporter and editor at New York Newsday\, Paul Moses will speak on his book\, “The Italian Squad: The True Story of the Immigrant Cops Who Fought the Rise of the Mafia.” With the press and the public in an uproar over immigrant crime\, New York’s police commissioner in 1904 formed a special team of foreign-born detectives called the “Italian Squad.” Led by Lt. Joseph Petrosino\, the Italian immigrant sleuths were nationally celebrated for their exploits—even as they struggled against deeply ingrained prejudice to convince both the public and fellow police that Italian immigrants were largely law- abiding people who would be good American citizens.
